Rumor: 26.4 megapixel Canon EOS 5D Mark III by mid-year

We had a tip roll in this weekend regarding the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, which I’d file under the “Perfectly Plausible” category. This person dispels talk of 30+ megapixels that we’ve seen in some rumors for a potential 5D Mark III, stating instead the 5D3 would have a more reasonable 26.4 MP sensor. That said, the specs:

  • 26.4 million effective pixels
  • ISO expandable to 102,400
  • 19 point AF system, 3 cross-type points
  • DIGIC 5
  • 4.9 fps continuous shooting
  • 63-zone iFCL metering
  • 1.04 million dot LCD
  • Improved camera grip
  • Improved pentaprism, approximately 100% frame coverage
  • released mid-year

No word on new video codecs or HD output while recording video, but otherwise these are the exact type of specs one would expect in a successor. We’ve seen talk of a 28MP sensor, so the 26.4MP definitely catches my eye. It seems a bit conservative, but we can’t really expect the 5D series to double in resolution every generation. Further even though Nikon will likely make a dramatic leap in resolution for their D800, I don’t think it will surpass 24MP, which would still give Canon their preferred resolution advantage.

On the other hand we’re swayed by talk of dramatic leaps in resolution for the 1Ds Mark IV, given that camera’s image quality bias, and thus its need to compete with the variety of medium format-lite cameras available. It makes a lot of marketing sense for that camera to be in the 30-40MP range, but it would also make a lot of manufacturing sense to use that sensor in more than one camera body (i.e. the Canon EOS 5D Mark III).

Hallelujah!! I’m ready to purchase as soon as it appears! Is there a list I can get my name on???

I’m telling you, this is going to be a near-impossible camera to land when it comes out. Every pro and their cousin is going to pre-order. I can’t wait until I get my grubby paws on one!

How reliable is this rumor? Coz’ I’m about to bite the bullet for a Mark II.

Any word if pending new 5 will have an articulated screen like G11/12 etc?

  • http://www.cameragearguide.com Camera Gear Guide

There was no mention of articulation or dimensions on the LCD. My guess would be no, to perhaps keep it compatible with all of the accessories available for the 5D2, and perhaps the articulation is not needed since the pro video industry would be using monitors etc.

OMG, still so crappy AF, 3 cross type points? why they act like this, i understand that’ s product positioning across product range, however the company should focus more on delivering pleasure and good PR, than marketing only. AF should be like in 7D so the 5D will still surpass 7D having FF. It’s so disappoting. I really would like to see some up to date AF system in that camera and it does not have to be a state of art, only following the market.

Only THREE cross-type sensors, when all 19 are cross-type in the 7D? Does someone at Canon get paid to deliberately cripple the 5D series cameras? Why do this when they’ve already got the AF system in another camera?

The layout of the 19 points, if they lift it right from the 7D, will still be seriously suboptimal even if they are all cross-type. Nikon’s AF point coverage in the D700 is more useful than the diamond pattern in the non-1 series Canons. One of these days Nikon will put cross-type sensors away from the center area. That will make the Nikon full-frame bodies the clear go-to choice for event and action photographers.

I suspect that there may be two new cameras on the way. One with say a full frame 5 frame/second 26-30Mp sensor (3D?) and a second with a full frame 7-8 frame/second 20Mp sensor (5D Mk II?). Both with similar autofocus & metering to the 7D. Both would be feasible and would cover whatever stategy Nikon adopts for the D700 replacement.

I have a Canon 7d and i’m waiting for the 5d mk III to enter in FF but these specs didn’t get me REALLY excited… anyway… i love my 7d… i will wait for the video specs… DIGIC V looks really cool anyway!

I heard rumours that he 5D3 will have the 7D’s AF system. At least it will be on par. If not better.

I like the 7D’s 5 AF point single point AF. I use single point AF most of the time as I like to choose where the AF points go.

Looking forward to the 5D3 vs Nikon D800 war. Currently I’m a Nikon D300 owner. But if the 5D3 has the rumoured features listed plus high ISO performance as good as or better than the D700 I’m jumping ship.

  • Lhlee888

May I remind you they use different AF systems because the sensor in the 5D is full frame while the 7D is APS-C? the 5D is designed for potrait and landscape, with it’s full frame. There’s no need to put more cross types in the AF system

  • Lhlee888

How do you install a APS-C AF system on a fullframe sensor?

  • Lhlee888

Impossible. APS-C sized AF systems could not be installed in a full frame sensor

  • Shawnham51

If sporting/event and such photography is your bread and butter then the 5D series is NOT for you. The 5D is more suited and by design for studio and commercial work.

Although I use mine for weddings it is best for commercial studio and location work if you don’t shoot sports etc.

Personally I think the specs look good and expect good things from DIGIC V and couldn’t careless about the video side – I’m a photographer.

Incidentally the 7D (low end) and the 1D series are designed with sports and action high frame shooting focusing etc.

Canon knows what it’s doing and yes they have the technology you want but each camera in int’s line-up is designed for specific reasons.
If you can’t understand that then you probably just want bells and whistles.

  • Bdd888

Which isn’t to say you still couldn’t use the 5D2 or future 5D3 for sports. Lots of good sports photographers do not rely on the 9FPS ability or a camera. The key to getting the shot is the sports photographer’s ability to predict the shot. IMHO I think leaving it in the hands of FPS is a crutch. And is a gamble you manage to get the money shot among the 9 frames.

My buddy bought a Canon T2 Rebel because it had more FPS than his P&S. He was assuming that would allow him to catch “moments” of his young kids better. Not true. Hit & miss.

I myself shoot more portraits and landscapes. Almost never shoot multiple frames per second. So I’m sure they future 5D3 would suit my shooting style. Though honestly I am also waiting to see what Nikon does with the D800. I’m looking for a FF DSLR in a non-Pro body as my next DSLR.

Funny how people are complaining already. I’d be curious to see how good are the photos taken by the most grumpy of you guys.

The best techies, the worst artists…

  • featheredlight

If it’s only 3 cross type sensors I will finally make the switch to Nikon.
@Lhlee888 have you tried to shot in dramatic lighting with the 5dii and any other focus point than the center? It sucks!

  • Bdd888

Could Canon not adapt the same design for a FF sensor? Hmmm…

I think this is a question for an engineer. But I assume it can be done. Not to use t he exact same AF system but one along the same design idea but adapted for the FF sensor.

  • Sean

What is the rumor on the price point?

  • Nj

Who cares? Most important is the availability of a screen like the Eg-S for manual focusing. Who the heck needs AF at all, I want a 1980s style 0.9x viewfinder!

  • EYEBALL

Nikon did it with the D3s. It has full frame and 9 fps with 15 cross type.

  • Bdd888

And may I suggest to you that we mean to use a similar design. Not the exact one used on an APS-C sensor. I’m no engineer but it should be able to be done. Retool an AF system along the same lines. Nikon has the “same” AF system on their APS-C and FF DSLRs. Why can’t Canon?
